Hi everybody,

First time poster here !

Me and the GF are looking at going up to QLD from Sydney to do some diving in July. There is SO MUCH information online about it, it's bewildering. We want to dive with minke/humpback whales and do some other good dives at some of the pristine reefs.
Heard that some of the reefs are starting to bleach as well so wanted advice.

We are padi:
Advanced open water (intermediate diver)
Open water (novice)
Low - Mid price bracket

Not sure if you HAVE to do a liveabord, but can't justify 2500$+ Per person on top of flights and other expenses.

Is there another way to see the minkes and at the same time get to some of the pristine reefs to see other cool stuff?

Would we fly into cairns then take a bus or rent a car to port douglas?

Which operator do you guys recommend and has anybody been in the same situation and have a plan?

Thanks in advance.

Courtney Joe,
I'd also like to find a cheap way to swim with Minke's on the GBR, but as the number of permits are limited, and the numbers wanting to do it are unlimited, there are few discounts forthcoming. It is possible to get on a trip slightly cheaper if you are willing to fill a last minute vacancy, but there are no guarantees. Sometimes there are research trip volunteer opportunities, but they are usually taken by students. Good luck!
