At the mouth of the Tamar River (Tasmania) off Low Head the main channel drops spectacularly from around 10m to over 50m and back up again. Recently a team of divers from the Tasmanian SCUBA Diving club did a crossing of the channel from the Farwell Beacon on the Middle Bank (eastern side) to Shear Reef on the western side . Below is a link of some GoPro footage from the dive

Great dive, what it lacks in numbers of fish it certainly makes up for in incredibly rich bottom growth. Cool water makes for excellent diving, thanks for posting!

Thanks AB, yeah the fish life is a little sparse particularly below 30m where the reef structure is less complex, but the diversity and colour of sessile invertebrate life is pretty amazing. There is usually always a hive of fish activity under the beacon, which makes for a great spot to finish the dive and do any deco when diving only the eastern side of the Channel.

A spot we like to dive 1500m south the reef is much more craggy and holds a lot more fish all the way down the reef.

Actually, I'm blown away at the number of different species of encrusting life on the steeper sections, you'd be up all night describing a std 50 metre survey line! I wonder if Reef Life Survey has a site there? Mary was really impressed as well, but we did wonder how you got back the the entry point as it's a fair walk!!

Yeah it would be a tough gig!! A study specifically of soft corals in the area was recently completed where around 6 new species were identified.

That particular dive is boat dive so no walking! The nearby Fish Beacon can be done as a shore dive.

Well documented James. I remember you doing that.
Considered it a gutsy effort then and still do.

Thanks Greg, we did the crossing dive again the other week when we were up there for a club trip. Took a GoPro and a few lights this time to get a bit of footage of the dive

We were diving at Port Phillip Heads this afternoon and heard a coast guard (Tamar Rescue?) request to help a vessel in distress off Low Head. We are always willing to help, but it's a 12 hour steam for us! Good to hear shortly after that the distressed vessel was in tow.
