Interesting, should check out the exploits of hard hat diver Jonno Johnson in the 1930 s. Walked over 40 kilometres in Bass Strait checking for a fault in the telephone cable between Tasmania and Victoria in company with fishing ketch Julie Burgess. Given an average depth of 50 meters it was quite an accomplishment back then. Was one of the first uses of an underwater telephone link to a surface vessel.
Amazing diver and you should be able to Google up some more info on him.
Cheers.
