Guiness Scuba Dive World Record was Smashed!

The Victorian Dive Community has gotten behind DIVA's World Record attempt, and now has enough divers signed up to break the existing Guiness World Record for the longest chain of scuba divers. The current record of 308 is held by the Italians, but on December 2 (or the alternate date of dec 7 if conditions are not suitable), well over 308 divers will enter the water at Rye Pier and exit as record holders. Registrations are capped at 400, so there is still time to be part of this, but you would need to contact your local dive shop or club pretty quickly! Participants will receive a commemorative T shirt as part of their $25 entry fee, and there will be thousands of $$ in prizes on the day. This will be a memorable day for the Victorian Dive community as we all get together to kick off the summer dive season.

Wow, registrations are close to 400, so we are going to SMASH the record! It's awesome to see Melbourne's divers get behind this, and shows the rest of the world how strong scuba diving is here. The dive will be amazing enough to get 400 divers under at the same time, but the after party will be memorable! If you miss out on registering to be a World Record Holder, I'd come anyway to be a part of this amazing event.

I just read all of the above a smiled thinking “Carn Ostrailya” and then I read oh the attempt is capped at 400.

What pea brain numpty shop nazi would place a “Cap” on the maximum number of participants in an Official World Record....

I'm not part of the organising team, but I heard that the permits and logistics of getting 400 divers diving together were the limiting factors. There were still lots of divers wanting to register after the limit was reached so 500 divers would have been possible. It is going to be a considerable challenge to coordinate 400 divers on the beach then getting them 200 metres off shore to get to 3+ metres, then get everybody to form a chain on the bottom and film it for proof. Also didn't want to kill the challenge for others to have a go. Jeez, if a bunch of Mexicans can do it, Croweaters, Coat Hangers and Banana benders might think they are also a chance!

I was clever enough not to register, so I can sit back and watch the circus!

Despite the threat of an"unprecedented rain event" the challenge is going ahead! If the task of organising 400 divers to dive at the same time wasn't daunting enough we can add to that getting enough divers to the event with the government urging people not to drive anywhere tomorrow unless necessary. The rain predicted for the Mornington Peninsula is only 23 mm, but for some Melbourne suburbs up to 60mm, and the chance of flash flooding. The DIVA committee have weighed everything up and decided to go for it. Will enough divers get there? Will they be able to get more than 308 divers linking on the bottom at the same time? We'll know by this time tomorrow!

The Scuba Doctor dive shop is opening early at 7 am (instead of the usual 7:30 am) to help participants get ready. We'll also be providing air fills for $5 to world record holders on Saturday after the event.

They did it!!! 365 divers checked in and after a few dropouts 360 divers held an underwater chain long enough for a world record. It has to be ratified by Guiness, but all looks good! The weather was not bad, with just a few patches of light rain, and the water was 20 degrees. The dive done, we all adjourned to the pub for festivities which included a scuba auction, and raffle for prizes from Redboats dives to a trip to Vanuatu. Given the Premier was warning people not to drive anywhere due to extreme weather, it was amazing to see so many divers show up. It shows how keen Victorian divers are, and how amazing the dive community is. Congratulations to all our new World Record Holders! Let's see if Sydney or Brisbane divers could do that!!

Thanks for posting the pics Alan,

Congratulations to the organisers and all participants for a very well planned and brilliantly executed event at Rye on Saturday 2/12/17 (despite the weather being a bit ordinary).

As a resident of Rye I was a little apprehensive as of late some of the townsfolk are definitely over several of the "en-mass" groups that descend on our little town in a disruptive way (jet skiers, schoolies, etc are some that come to mind.)

However this event's thorough organisation and good behaviour, together with the obvious display of infectious enthusiasm for scuba diving, and a buoyant, upbeat, good humoured attitude won the hearts and minds of locals and the non-diver visitors alike. The amazing number of divers, coming in all shapes and sizes but united in purpose, was a very strong positive statement to all who witnessed it.

I'm sure the welcome mat will go out to the summer scuba diver influx and even the grumpy pier fishermen will admire the effort demonstrated, and perhaps show more tolerance over our shared spaces. Good too that some of the local volunteer groups may have raised a few extra funds. Some of the businesses in town would also have got a share, and the pub in particular worked hard to provide a good setting for the apres-dive "do". It was a good atmosphere.

Hopefully a little further from the centre of town, the Local Dive Shop picked up some extra custom with their extended hours and air fill deals. Just hope the shop also picked up some of the chatter that I heard while standing on the pier and later in the pub. From the heroic "scooter team" who seemed to be in the water from about 9 to 11:30am, to the "megaphone man" (10am), and from the divers themselves arriving at the line around 10:30am, the unsolicited consensus I overheard was that a small but persistent current was flowing eastward towards Rosebud at all of these times.

There was no slack water period during this time span despite the shop's web advice that there would be. Slack was "done and dusted" at the pier by around 7:20am, not long after it was expected at the Rip. Boys it really is time to correct this unhelpful situation!

That minor gripe aside, the day amply demonstrated that VIC divers and the Victorian Diving Industry Association can achieve great things when working together in a happy and cooperative way. Well done everyone! Fingers crossed all the World Record conditions were met - you all richly deserve that success.

cheers,
packo

To the 360 Mexicans I offer my congratulations at achieving a World Record.

Lloyd, AB and Packo, The scuttlebutt up here in Sydvegas was that it was a mass suicide attempt because of the depression caused by a lifetime of shit weather and so you wouldn't have to look at Melbourne....

I'm sure Sydney will surpass that record at Frenchman"s Bay so have your 15 seconds of fame for the time beings. Records are set to be broken.

Ha! You may have to line up behind the crow eaters who, I'm told, already have a challenge committee! (Now they just have to find more than 360 working regs in SA...) Actually not worried about Sydney or Brisbane, those Taswegians only need a few more to turn up to the Combined Clubs Weekend in June and they will have it! We can sit back and watch the circus, knowing we were able to smash the record in the middle of a weather emergency when half of our group couldn't get there! We need another excuse for a get together, so, go ahead, try...

Here is the guy who deserves the bulk of the credit for getting the event up and completed. Luke English has a vision for Victorian diving, but unlike others who also do, he is making it happen. Oh, and DiveOz was represented by the guy on the right!
