hi everyone,

i'm hoping you guys and girls could give me afew pointers...

I am a new diver and want to set up a way of logging my dives.

I was thinking of doing it as an Microsoft Excel file so that i can make use of the formating.

Also i need to make sure i've got all the necessary things that i should log. A ruff list includes:
- Date
- Time
- Location
- Bottom time
- Dive time
- Cumulative time
- Temp
- Air consumption
- Buddies
- Wetsuit,weight,bcd,regs
- Comments

What am i forgetting????

Being the experienced divers you are, you'd probably have worked it all out already...so please help me!

"efharisto"
(thanks in greek)

VizTemp above and below surface
weather
sea conditions
weight used
thermal protection used
tanks used

(last three to work out your weighting, v important if your a newer diver, once you've done this for a few dives, you'll work out what you need for various gear configs...)

Heard about the latest Tech Cert? Net diver. No underwater experience required, just needs to be able to search internet and repeat others useless dribble

Here are a couple more:

Visibility
Depth
Dive Master
Dive Boat
Type of dive (Wreck, Deep, etc.)
Type of gas used (air to start)
TemperaturesAs for Temps
- Air
- Surface
- Temp at depth
I also record dive gear such as
- gloves
- hood
- knife
- torch

In the comments section, I especially record any problems that I had or how I thought I could improve the dive. For example:

Too much weight
Not enought weight
Got lost - forgot to take depth reading at a anchor.
Great dive. Bring wife next time.
Could have used a torch to look under rocks etc.

When I first started, I found reading this stuff reminded me to think about it BEFORE I got in the water. That way, I didn't have the same problem again.

It is also worthwhile tracking Surface Air Consumption (SAC).

There is a thread somewhere here with details or read this article:

www.ivydene1.demon.co.uk/dive/gascalc.htm

SAC is a fairly good indicator of how your technique/ relaxation/comfort is improving as you continue to dive.

I like to record what thermal protection and what weight worn to refer back to.

and most importantly

what critters you saw.

Better to use a database program like Lotus approach or MS access then you can do groovy searches and get some meaningful analysis.

....I just do eyes ....

I do both PC and Paper logs, PC logs all the technical stuff, and I put some of the basics etc into the paper log plus write the dive up.

you could also try one of the dive logs on the web. I use DataTrak from Uwatec, but SmartTrak is the latest'n'greatest. You don't need the downloadable dive computer - just use the software to record your dives.

www.uwatec.com/index-eng.htm

For my 'actual' log - I have a Word document with lots of boxes and places to write stuff. Loosely based on the NAUI log (which is who I did OW/AOW with), but you could steal ideas from PADI, or any of the other log book manufacturers.

Make sue you log all your dives!!!
It is always a shame it look back on your log to find you've missed some details of a paricular dive that will remind you of some fond memory some time later. Grab yourself a book of the area your divng and log the creatures you see too.

The prior replies are fairly acturate in respect to the itmes to log, but when you can afford it get a download unit for your computer that covers a major part of these items.

May you only return with bubbles in your tank! {1/3 in, 1/3 out, 1/3 reserve}

I use dive.site as a logbook.
It's really cool that I can keep not just my dive logs there, but I can also store my diving pictures and use the interactive dive map to explore new dive sites or chart my own.
I've been looking for a service like this for a long time, but the ones I've found before this one are slow and their interface is not as nice :P
