Directions: Drive through Stenhouse Bay township for app 3k, as you come over the first major hill you will see Chinaman's Hat island, obviously it looks like a Chinaman's Hat. Park in the only available car parking area.
Description: Quite a walk to the beach and a fair snorkel from shore to reach the semi exposed reef, but worth it, walk over the reef and drop in on the other side, you are in amongst it almost immediately.
The wall and reef system circumnavigates the island but if you wish to go all the way around don't dilly dally.
Plenty of swim throughs, chimneys, caves, ledges and crevices, mainly a look see dive as the area has been stripped of cray and abalone some time ago but the fish life is still prevalent.
The best time to dive it is during a northerly when the swell has dropped, the exposed reef can be difficult to cross if there is too much wave movement.
The last dive I did there I was visited by three dolphins who only left me when I became too exhausted to keep playing up to them, they got close, very close, within touching distance on many occasions. Absolutely fantastic but a little awesome when you see how big and powerful they really are.
A dive I always try to do if the conditions are right.
